This may be different. At 62 .. i had my dream career job of 25yrs... ! My life was totally connected. All my closest friends. .... i made a foolish mistake(s) and lost my job. I stressed so badly. It was my purpose. Identity, social interactions, structure.. etc. Im devastated. Stressed, anxiety, chronic insomnia and depression. Its like i died. I have no interest in life..... i don't go outside anymore. Im just so upset with myself, and how my life was completely altered... 😫😭☠️

Your best advantage is to make sure you put yourself in a position where you have choices. Always create a situation where you have choices and that will give you peace and confidence and make you not tolerate any BS from anyone. Let the people that you work with know by the way you conduct yourself that you have choices and it is not your life and that gives you power. Sometimes choosing to change may look scary because of all the uncertainties but often times is the best thing that will ever happen to you.

18 years, just asked for a promotion again, like at my five, ten, and fifteen, ahead of my year 20 mile marker. The response was basically, there's a job opening coming up for a managerial position, and I should apply for that. In my current role, I run four departments, but I have the feeling that no matter what I do, it's never going to be good enough to get an honest to goodness promotion into management. I've gone out of my way to contribute in many ways, and I really have no one looking over my shoulder.

see this is why my goal shifted. i once wanted to be a lifer but i realized that companies don't value lifers anymore. i wanted to build up to a decent salary and work there for the rest of my career. i realized quickly, however, that's not going to work these days because companies no longer value a lifer. companies have killed the lifer, and thus we're forced to all become ladder climbers.

Way back in like 2013-2015ish, i found a job posting in San Diego county for a mom and pop grocery store looking to hire a bagger and requiring a Masters degree, while also paying minimum wage. I honestly wanted to call them up and ask if they were serious! Not that i have a Masters degree so id have been unqualified from the get-go but i was laughing too hard at how absurd it was.

Interesting to hear that the job boards do have a way to auto-email all candidates when closing. I applied to a couple dozen places in March and April when I was worried that I wouldn't get my work term (internship) and was trying to go the route of getting a permanent position and exempting my college's work term requirement. 2 of those are flagged as closed on my Indeed feed but none emailed me and the rest are still pending.

It's difficult in a company not to bond with your colleagues. I'm the oldest in the company, I don't have lunch with my colleagues, I'm categorized as an introvert. I just didn't want to be part of the gossip. I didn't want to hear it, let alone comment on it. I've been set quite apart, and it's not easy to find respite from my colleagues when I need it. Here are my horror stories: As a teen I was hired by a dollar tree type store to help out. The first day, I was made to clean the floors on my knees. It was clear it had never been swept. I asked if they had any brooms, but they ignored me. Then the weekend came up and the manager called my home (landline, this was in the 90ies) screaming asking where I was. I was confused as I was not supposed to work that weekend. I went immediately to clarify and she put me down in front of the other staff member, yelling that if I put my name down then it is my responsibility to show up. I told her I never put my name down. She didn’t believe me. I was about to cry when the other coworker stepped in and admitted that the third staff member had done it intentionally so that I would get into trouble. I quit right there and then and never looked back. Instead I became a tutor. Other job I had tried prior to that was helping out in an ice cream parlor. During my induction training, the manager showed me the sound system and where they kept their CDs and went: ˋAnd don’t start stealing the CDs….i know your gypsie kind! I almost burst out laughing but instead remained polite and just excused myself, that the training was over and that I was no longer interested. He got angry and ranted for about 2 hours about the importance of having this job as it was the perfect preparation for college. (Whatever that meant). I walked out of there and felt beaten down and proud at the same time. Feels like it happened yesterday.

Sad part about the internships is that anyone who was in college during the pandemic was robbed, I had one lined up for summer 2020 and it was eliminated and I didn't have a chance to get another quality internship by the time I graduated in 2022, companies just weren't back to that point in my area.

Massive has huge potential, but in its lowest-cost paid plan, it can only submit you for 20 jobs per WEEK. I find 20 jobs per day to apply to during most weeks. That and the poor search parameters make it a "not ready for prime time" idea.

Most if not all office type employees are considered at-will employees. You can leave whenever you want, they can fire you whenever they want. I guess in some perfect, gentle/cuddly world, hr would fire people in a way that makes it less of a shock. Does she think fighting it will make them change their minds? Not how it works.

I went straight to grad school when I finished undergrad in 2018 (which I could only do because 1. I had a scholarship that I kept all four years, and 2. my folks helped back me up on the rest). Took me 3 months to find what I currently see as my career position in the federal government after sending out over 50 applications and resumes and 2 unsuccessful interviews (one I never even heard back from-shocking😮‍💨). Not sure why people have so much vitriol towards state and federal government positions-they are legit jobs that can take care of you nicely provided you play your cards right during the process. Given how difficult it often has been to land good jobs for even the most qualified, any message about these being worthless posts is decades out of date

IMO "we're a family-oriented company" is a red flag. When I hear this, I assume the employer is biased to heteronormative lifestyles. I assume they're goimg to assign a lower value cis women's work as secondary to their childbearing function. And I expect employees with children will be given more time off while i'll be expected to cover for them. I've never heard a "family-oriented" employee give an example that included caring for a partner or parent. I assume, probably not without basis, the "family-oriented" is code for "we only want to hire cis straight people who are not ambitious women"
